Men's Lacrosse Bounces Back, Defeats Curry 10-7

Southwestern Men's lacrosse bounced back from their overtime loss to UMass-Boston in a big way, beating the Curry College Colonels 10-7 just 24 hours after the end of their game against UMass.

Despite an abundance of sore legs across the roster, the Pirates came out firing on all cylinders, leaving the Colonels stunned and wondering what hit them. The offense felt no sympathy for the Colonel's goaltender, putting up six goals in the first quarter. With Hudson Bearden winning a high majority of the draws, the Pirates were essentially able to play make-it-take-it, leaving the Colonels with hardly any offensive opportunities. A score of 6-2 ended the first quarter with the Pirates already having a handle on the game.

The next quarter ground to a halt as each team only had one goal in the second. The Pirates' struggled to clear the ball for the second game in a row making it hard for the offense to gain any traction. High pressure from the Pirates caused plenty of turnovers for the Colonels which helped the Pirates to a 7-3 halftime lead.

The Pirates' stood tall defensively throughout the entire game. Nate Blair had another tremendous game in the net, accumulating 14 saves and an unyielding 66 percent save percentage. But it was Blairs' defense in front of him that played lights out. The three close-defenseman, Jake Hessinger, Caleb Sowell, and Patrick Cvitanovic, smothered their attackman all night. Still, Sr. LSM Aidan Gildea was a menace to the Colonels' offense, causing four turnovers during the game. Sr. LSM Tyler Santos also scooped up four ground balls while defensive midfielder Matt Minnick had two as well.

The Pirates' cleared much more efficiently in the second half thanks to the speed of Fr. Declan O'Donnell. The improvement in clearing and the lead the Pirates built to start the game helped them cruise to the finish line and a 10-7 win over the Colonels. The Pirate offense relied on eight different players to score goals. Midfielder Blake Sitterly and attackman Nick Doxey would be the only multi-goal scorers of the night with two goals apiece.

The Pirates will be up against the Hendrix College Warriors on Saturday, March 19th at 1:00 PM.
