Pirates add eight-year-old Blake Browder to roster

The Southwestern University men's lacrosse team welcomed introduced a new teammate on Friday, Jan. 29, as the squad signed eight-year-old Blake Browder.

In December 2013, Browder was diagnosed with common variable immune deficiency (CVID), a disorder that impairs the immune system. CVID causes him to be highly susceptible to infections. In order to help his body with antibodies and keep him healthy, Browder undergoes monthly infusions.

With the help of Team IMPACT, Southwestern head coach Bill Bowman and the Pirates were paired with Browder.

The squad welcomed him and his family with open arms during a signing ceremony. Browder signed to join the Pirates and then was presented with a personalized jersey, a lacrosse stick and gloves.

Browder, who attended Southwestern's thrilling 8-7 overtime victory over Hendrix a week later, is more than a Pirate teammate. He is now one of 28 brothers.
