Pirates Drop Heartbreaker to Whittier College

 

Whittier, CA – The Southwestern University Pirates dropped a heartbreaker 8-7 to the undefeated Whittier Poets on Sunday February 24 2013. The Poets have been on a tear winning their first two games by a score of 16-6 and 17-6 but the Pirates defense made the Poets work for every possession.

Mike Villa, junior attackman had a spectacular game with 2 goals, along with sophomore attackman Austin FoxAlex Michael, junior midfielder chipped in with 1 goal and 2 assists.  Juniors Tyler Downing and Carter Cowan also chipped in with goals.

The Poets came out of the first quarter with a 3-1 lead but that soon changed. The second quarter was all Southwestern as Austin Fox scored on a man up goal assisted from Jeremy Tufnell and then came right back and stung the corner with a laser shot between two Whittier defensemen.  Carter Cowan gave the Pirates their first lead with a man down goal, the 5th man down goal of the season for the Pirates. Then came the goal of the year by Michael Villa, a behind the back goal that was assisted by Elliot Kelly that left the Poets stunned.
 
In the third quarter the Poets adjusted and scored 2 goals and Mike Villa added another goal to make the score 6-5 going into the fourth.
 
The Poets took advantage of some late turnovers to take a 7-6 lead when Tyler Downing scored to tie the game at 7-7 with only a few minutes left in the game. Whittier answered right back with a goal to go up 8-7.
 
The pirates had one last chance to send the game in overtime, as they were man up with 30 seconds left in the game, a shot with 5 seconds left was saved by the Whittier goalie to seal the win for the Poets
 
The Pirates next game will be their home opener on Friday March 1, 2013 7PM against Centenary.
