First Half Jump Starts Pirates for Big Win

CONWAY, Ark. - An offensive onslaught in the first half gave Southwestern a big lead and the defense did the rest as SU defeated Hendrix 13-6 on Saturday evening.

Southwestern opened strong, needing just two and a half minutes to get on the board as Austin Fox, assisted by Jeremy Tufnell, gave SU the lead. Tufnell added a goal of his own two minutes later.

Hendrix responded with one goal, but Southwestern charged on with three consecutive goals to end the first up three, 5-2.

A man-up goal by Tyler Downing, assisted by Fox, two minutes in kicked off the second quarter. Southwestern scored four goals in the frame to lead by four, 9-5, at halftime.

With a comfortable lead in hand, Southwestern continued to pack on the offense while the defense became even stronger. The Pirates posted four goals in the final two quarters and allowed just one to arrive at the 13-6 final.

Fox and Downing led the scoring for SU with three goals each while Tufnell and Jackson Timian each had two assists. Cameron Millstone did most of the scoring for Hendrix with five goals on the evening.

Southwestern narrowly led in shots 27-20 and picked up six more groundballs, 54-48. AJ Cole earned the win with seven saves.

The Pirates, now 2-0 on the year, take the show on the road to face tough opponents in Oneonta State on Saturday in Whittier, California at 3 p.m. CST.
