Early Walks Dig Too Big a Hole for Pirates

Early Walks Dig Too Big a Hole for Pirates

Despite out hitting the Comets of UT-Dallas on Tuesday, the Pirates dropped the non-conference game 9-3.

Walks by the Pirate pitching staff and timely hitting by the Comets saw Southwestern quickly down 9-0 by the 5th inning on Tuesday.  Starter Chris Webber allowed just 1 hit, but gave up 2 runs in his 2 innings of work.  After 2 very rough innings in which Pirate relievers allowed 5 runs on just 2 hits, first year pitcher Tyler Poi stopped the bleeding, allowing 2 runs in 3 strong innings of work.  Relief pitchers Nick Cox and Jeff Romine worked scoreless 7th and 8th innings to keep the Pirates within striking distance.

Pirate batters came with a steady onslaught of hits, but were not able to get on the board until the 6th when Brett Martin, Greg Thumm, and Lance Gottardy all singled with one out to load the bases.  A Nick Ashford walk and a Zach Lynch single put two on the board for the Pirates.  The top of the 7th started off well after first year Cruz Luna launched a 2-0 offering over the left field fence to make the score 9-3.  Despite a steady stream of hits after the home run, the Pirates were unable to put any more on the board.  The Pirates would strand 11 runners and rack up 11 hits and 4 walks.

First year Cruz Luna led the way for the Pirates with 2 hits and an RBI.  First year Zac Cleveland also totalled 2 hits along with senior catcher Nick Ashford.

The Pirates will come back home for a 2 game set with Hendrix College this Saturday and Sunday.  Both games will start at 1 pm.
