SEGUIN, Texas — Southwestern baseball surrendered nine runs combined over the seventh in the eighth inning to remain winless with a 12-7 loss to the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs in the first game of a three-game series.

The Pirates put together a season-high seven runs, getting a two-RBI home run from Bryce Debbs as part of a three-run sixth inning and a solo shot from Jacob Tanner in the eighth. It wasn't enough to overcome four errors, leading to five unearned runs, including four over the disastrous seventh and eighth inning stretch.

Southwestern got a solid performance from starting pitcher J.J. Slack, who went six innings and surrendered three runs, including one unearned, off five hits with eight strikeouts to leave the game with a 4-3 lead.

Trey Schwarz relieved Slack to start the seventh inning, giving up a leadoff single to Austin Colon. After an error in the infield put two on, Alex Cornman delivered an RBI-single to center, followed by a pair of sacrifice flies to give Texas Lutheran the lead.

The Pirates gave up six runs on three hits with two errors in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Schwarz pitched one inning and surrendered seven runs, including three earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Ruben Garcia pitched the eighth inning and surrendered two earned runs.

Tanner led the Pirates with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, including his home run. Texas Lutheran's Cole Irby finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Bulldogs.

With the loss, Southwestern drops to 0-6. Texas Lutheran improves to 4-1. Both teams will resume action on Saturday for a doubleheader hosted by Southwestern.
