GEORGETOWN, Texas — A small fielding error to lead off the top of the fourth inning created a butterfly effect that cost the Southwestern baseball team six runs on the way to a 14-3 loss to the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs in seven innings.
Southwestern starting pitcher Braden Anderson surrendered seven hits through three innings but managed to mitigate the damage, allowing just one run each in the first and second, stranding five.
Brooks Raby took the mound for Southwestern to start the fourth, and Collin Docker immediately reach on an error by the shortstop. Things unraveled from there as Raby hit a batter, induced a fly out to right field, and hit another batter, setting up a Cauley sacrifice fly to right field to score Docker.
Raby walked the next batter, ending his afternoon with Brandt Daughtry taking over. Daughtry surrendered four consecutive singles, giving up five runs before Nathan Fetchel relieved him to get the Pirates out of the inning.
Southwestern had another rough outing in the top of the sixth, giving up four runs on three hits, surrendering two on walks and another one on a passed ball. Texas Lutheran added another two runs in the seventh, getting a two-out single and three consecutive walks to score one run, then adding the other on an RBI-single by Cornman.
The Pirates' three runs came on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Tanner in the fourth to score Maxwell Mims, and back-to-back RBIs by Tanner and Montgomery in the sixth.
Mims led the Pirates offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, scoring two runs. Lance Kruse and Preston Witt had the Pirates' other two hits. Texas Lutheran had 16 hits and seven walks, leaving 12 stranded.
Southwestern fell to 0-7 with the loss. The Pirates would go on to split the doubleheader with an 11-8 victory in Game 2.
