SHREVEPORT, La. — The Centenary Gentlemen scored an unearned run on a walk-off fielder's choice to defeat the Southwestern baseball team 3-2 in the first game of a three-game conference series.
Southwestern's Travis Harvey competed in a pitcher's duel against Centenary's Tyler Herrera and Parker Primeaux. Centenary's duo combined for 10 strikeouts, with Primeaux pitching the final 3.2 innings to pick up the win.
Harvey struck out eight and surrendered three runs, two of which were earned, on six hits and four walks.
Centenary scored first in the bottom of the second inning. Cade Labruyere opened with a leadoff triple to right field, then Noah Koehmsted hit a sacrifice fly to right for the score.
Maxwell Mims hit a two-RBI triple in the fifth inning, scoring Ted Lobkowicz and James Vaquero, who reached on a walk and single.
Centenary tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. Cole Collins pinch-hit for Tyler Welch and delivered a double to right-center. Robinson moved Collins to third with a sacrifice bunt, and Preston Ludwick scored him with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Harvey hit Zachery Van Gorkom with a pitch to start the bottom of the ninth, and John Beaudion hit an infield single compounded by an error that put runners on second and third. Southwestern intentionally walked Gary Hewitt to load the bases, replacing Harvey with Gregory Ferguson. Julien DeLeon pinch hit for Collins and grounded to second, but the Pirates were only to get the out at second in an attempt to end the inning with a double play, surrendering the game-winning run.
Southwestern drops to 16-16 with a 7-9 conference record. Both teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 1:00 p.m.
