GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern baseball is sporting an eleven-game winning streak and holds first place in the SCAC Baseball standings after their series sweep of conference opponent, Schreiner University.
Game 1
The Pirates were keen on getting the first game of the series out of the way as they handled the Mountaineers in seven innings on Friday. An eight-run fourth inning slingshotted the Pirates to a 12-4 lead despite being tied 4-4 at the top of the fourth. Excellent defense allowed Southwestern to end the game with two runs in the top of the fifth and seventh. Although it was a relatively close game despite the fourth, the ten-run rule at the end of seven innings brought the game to a close and a 14-4 victory for the Pirates. Shortstop Landon Durdin continued his hitting hot streak with four hits and three RBIs.
Game 2
Shreiner held the notion that the second game of the series would turn out differently than the first. Although the Pirates racked up four runs in the very first inning, the Mountaineers answered with six runs in the first and second. Bringing in freshmen pitcher Andrew Hardin at the third inning, the Pirates and Hardin only allowed one run for the rest of the game. Hardin threw five strikeouts in twenty batters faced, allowing the Pirate's bats to keep rolling on offense. Thirteen runs from innings four to seven brought the game to an 18-7 close and another short seven-inning win for Southwestern.
Game 3
In the final game of the series, Schreiner was able to extend the game to its full nine-inning length. The Mountaineers made the Pirates work for their final win of the series, but Southwestern's consistency at the plate and their pitching in the latter half of games ensured their ability to get the series sweep. Schreiner maintained a 4-3 lead at the bottom of the third, however, the Pirate's offensive and defensive consistency secured them two runs in the fourth, sixth, and eighth innings while allowing two runs to Schriner in just the seventh inning. The Pirate's team effort pushed them to a 9-7 victory and their first-place lead in the SCAC conference standings.
Baseball will battle their fourth American Southwest Conference opponent of the season at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, April 4th, at 6:00 PM.
