Baseball Loses First Game To Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas — The Southwestern University Pirates baseball team surrendered six runs over the final four innings to lose 8-4 to the Schreiner University Mountaineers in the first of a three-game series. 

Southwestern struck early, scoring on back-to-back RBI-singles from Preston Witt and Daniel Montgomery Jr., scoring Ted Lobkowicz and Jacob Tanner to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Schreiner cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second, scoring on an unearned run off an error with bases loaded. 

Both teams scored a run each in the third inning. Preston Witt hit a two-out solo blast for Southwestern, and Devin Hooper answered with an RBI-double to score Seth Joseph for Schreiner. 

Jacob Tanner gave the Pirates a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth, reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Maxwell Mims

Schreiner scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Gerardo Cardoz to score Hooper in the sixth before Southwestern starting pitcher Travis Harvey ended the inning and his evening. He finished with six complete innings, giving up three runs with two earned off six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. 

Skyler White took the mound to start the seventh for the Pirates, walking one and hitting another before Schreiner's Reece Hohhertz and Hooper hit an RBI-single and RBI-double back-to-back to give Schreiner a 5-4 lead. The Mountaineers added three more runs in the eighth off two hits, one walk, and an error. 

The Pirates stranded one in the top of the ninth, with Schreiner's Raine Uecker picking up the save. White finished with the loss, pitching two innings and giving up five runs, including three earned, with two walks and four hits. 

Witt led the Pirates with three hits in four at-bats, driving in two RBIs with one run scored. Lobkowicz and Trent Rashcke were each 2-for-4, with Lobkowicz scoring one run. Five different Pirates finished with one hit. 

With the loss, Southwestern drops to 8-15, and Schreiner improves to 7-12. Both teams will play tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at noon.
