Baseball Rallies To Defeat Schreiner

Baseball Rallies To Defeat Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas — Southwestern baseball's bench roughed up the Schreiner Mountaineers' bullpen, getting a combined three RBIs from pinch-hitters Sam Castillo and Landon Durdin to open the three-game series with a 5-3 win.

Southwestern and Schreiner got solid performances from starting pitchers Travis Harvey and Apollo Cassimatis as both moved quickly through the lineups in a game that breezed through in just over two-and-a-half hours.

Harvey was sharp early, striking out four of the first six hitters he faced, finishing with six in seven innings.

Schreiner broke through in the top of the fifth inning, leading off with Will Vogt drawing a walk and Tyler Juarez reaching on a single up the middle. Both runners advanced on one passed ball, then Vogt scored on another. Then, Jet Muniz drove in Juarez with an RBI single to left-center.

Southwestern cut into the deficit at the bottom of the sixth. Jacob Tanner sparked the offense with a two-out double to right-center, and Christian Melillo drove him in with an RBI double to right-center.

Schreiner opened the seventh inning with back-to-back doubles from DiCarlo and Vogt, scoring Joseph DiCarlo to give the Mountaineers a 3-1 lead.

Both teams turned to their bullpen to start the eighth inning, with Southwestern replacing Harvey with Gregory Ferguson. The freshman from Magnolia, Texas, struck out three of four hitters in the inning.

Daniel Garza replaced Cassimatis in the bottom of the inning, with the latter allowing only one run with five hits and two walks while striking out six. Garza struck out James Vaquero to start the inning, but Jacob Tanner followed with a single to right field to start Southwestern's rally. Melillo followed with his second hit of the day, hitting a single to left-center to put runners on the corners.

Henry Fisher capitalized with his first hit of the game, driving in Tanner with an RBI double down the right-field line. With runners on second and third, Southwestern head baseball coach JC Bunch replaced Alexander Cannata with Sam Castillo

Castillo delivered in the clutch, hitting a two-RBI single through the right side, scoring Fisher and Melillo to give Southwestern the lead, ending Garza's evening on the mound.

Schreiner turned to reliever Raine Uecker, and Bunch countered by pinch-hitting Landon Durdin for Tate Winfield, making the right call again with Durdin delivering an RBI single to right field to give Southwestern the 5-3 lead.

In the ninth, Ferguson returned to the mound and made quick work of Schreiner, inducing a pop-up and ground out, then striking out Juarez to pick up his third win of the season.

Southwestern improves to 11-14 with the win, including a 3-7 conference record. Both teams will resume play tomorrow with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
