Baseball Defeats Hardin-Simmons University

ABILENE, Texas — Southwestern baseball continued its momentum from the weekend, defeating Hardin-Simmons University 6-5 to extend its winning streak to three games.

Hardin-Simmons took advantage of starter Braden Simpson's early control issues in the bottom of the second inning, leading the inning off with a single, then drawing walks on three of the next four batters to score one run. Ruben Garcia took over, walking in another run before being replaced by Cole Johnson, who induced a 6-4-3 double play.

Southwestern responded in the top of the third, getting a single from Ted Lobkowicz to open the inning. After Hardin-Simmons retired the next two hitters, Jacob Tanner hit an RBI-double to left-center, and Preston Witt followed with an RBi-single through the right side to tie the game at 2-2.

Hardin-Simmons reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning, getting a two-out double from Hickman and RBI-single through the left side from Garrison.

The Pirates opened the top of the sixth with two consecutive outs but took advantage of an error, two walks, and a hit batter to score one run, then a Tanner RBI-single to score another, followed by a Witt walk with bases loaded for the third and final run of the inning.

Hardin-Simmons tied the game in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a walk with bases loaded and a fielder's choice.

Southwestern got a two-out, RBI-single from Lobkowicz to center to score Matthew Escamilla, who reached on a double down the rightfield line.  The Pirates held Hardin-Simmons scoreless the rest of the way, picking up the win.

With the victory, Southwestern improves to 5-9 while Hardin-Simmons drops to 4-11. The Pirates will hit the road the weekend for a three-game series against the University of Dallas.
