Baseball Overtakes DePauw, Extends Win Streak to Eight Games

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern baseball has completed a perfect five-game home stand while extending their win streak to eight games in the past week and a half. The DePauw Tigers came into the first game of two with the Pirates sporting a 5-7 record and was on the verge of starting their spring break off with a win, but Southwestern was keen on spoiling the party.

Game 1

It was all Tigers throughout the entirety of the first game. The DePauw offense showed consistency at the plate against the Pirate's pitching, scoring multiple runs in the first, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, and the Tigers held a 9-1 lead at the start of the eighth inning. Southwestern cut the lead down to 9-3 in the bottom of the eighth thanks to two walks and two hit-by-pitches from the Tiger pitching staff. With the bases loaded and two outs, Landon Durdin drove in Josh Endo to score the Pirate's second run of the evening. At the ensuing at-bat, Wyatt Kuhlow was hit by a pitch to bring in Maxwell Mims for the third run. No runs from the Tigers in the top of the ninth gave the Pirates a final chance at the plate with their work cut out for them.

What occurred can only be described as clutch hitting from the Pirates and a catastrophe from the Tigers. A Tres Organ single, an Endo walk, and a Mims HBP left the bases loaded for Southwestern with no outs and a chance to steal the game from DePauw. The Pirates rattled off six runs to tie the game at 9-9, with two outs and Durdin in scoring position. The senior second basemen Matthew Escamilla crushed the ball into right-center and passed both outfielders, allowing Durdin to make his way home and the Pirates to take the win, 10-9, in comeback fashion.

Game 2

The Pirates wouldn't need a comeback against DePauw in game two, in fact, they never trailed in the second matchup on Tuesday. Trent Raschke tallied four hits and three RBIs, leading both teams in each stat column, respectively. One hit and two RBIs from Mims, two hits and one RBI from Christian Melillo, and a hit and RBI from Preston Witt ensured Southwestern an easy 8-1 victory over DePauw. The senior pitcher Trey Dees (Ronnie) got the start and the win on the mound with five innings pitched, four strikeouts, and no runs scored for the third win of his career.

Baseball makes the drive to Kerrville, Texas, this weekend to resume conference play against the Schreiner Mountaineers on Friday, March 31st, at 2:00 PM and Sunday, April 1st, at 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM
