GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern University baseball team had a flair for the dramatic this past weekend in their three-game series against the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets.

The first game on Thursday night was a defensive battle throughout. The Pirates led 1-0 at the start of the seventh inning. Junior pitcher Stephen Rutherford took the Pirates to the top of the seventh before allowing two runs to the Yellow Jackets. Sophomore pitcher Ryan Corbett would come in to end the inning, but Howard Payne took a 2-1 lead headed into the bottom of the seventh.

Senior shortstop Landon Durdin homered in his at-bat to tie the game a 2-2 headed into the eighth. Corbett struck out six batters in his time on the mound giving the Pirates a chance to win the game headed into the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, the first basemen Trent Raschke stepped up to the plate and hit a walk-off home run to seal the game and the eighth win for the Pirates.

The teams returned for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon for seven innings in the first game and nine in the second. The Pirates found themselves down 4-3 in the top of the seventh inning. With runners on first and second, Max Mims came up to bat with one out. Mims hit a three-run homer to end the game in outstanding fashion for Southwestern, driving in Josh Endo and Jake Harris for a 6-4 win over the Yellow Jackets yet again.

Southwestern would fall in the final game of the series on Saturday. Nevertheless, Pirate faithful were treated to a show at Rockwell Family Field this weekend, witnessing two walk-off home runs and Southwestern baseball advancing to 9-2 on the season.

The Pirates will head to San Angelo to take on the Division II Angelo State University Rams before starting conference play against the University of Dallas. Southwestern will play on March 14th and 15th at 6:30 PM at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
