Southwestern Drops Two to Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas — Southwestern baseball lost both games in today's doubleheader against the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs, ending its season-high seven-game winning streak and suffering its first conference series loss of the season. 

Game 1 | Southwestern 5, Texas Lutheran 7

Texas Lutheran hit two home runs and put together seven runs off eight hits and four walks to win the first game of the doubleheader.

Southwestern struck first in the top of the second on a two-run blast from Lance Kruse over the right-field wall, scoring Daniel Montgomery Jr., who led the inning off with a single to left. 

The Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs on three hits, punctuated by a home run of their own on a three-run blast from Cullen Motsinger. Texas Lutheran added one run each over the next two innings, scoring on a Tyler Cauley home run in the third, then an Austin Colon RBI-single in the fourth. 

Southwestern added two in the fifth on a two-RBI double by Jake Harris, scoring Hayden Craig and Ted Lobkowicz. The Pirates added another run in the sixth on an RBI-double to left field by Bryce Debbs, scoring Landon Durdin

The Pirates had an opportunity in the ninth, putting two on with one out, but hit back-to-back fly outs to right field to end the game. 

Travis Harvey started and pitched six innings for Southwestern, giving up seven runs on seven hits with four walks. Skyler White took over in the seventh, pitching two scoreless innings while surrendering just one hit. 

Landon Weatherly pitched 5.1 innings for Texas Lutheran to earn his third win of the season. Chase Cutler pitched the last 3.2 innings, earning the save. 

Game 2 | Southwestern 7, Texas Lutheran 13

Tyler Post his two home runs and drove in four RBI's with three runs scored to lead Texas Lutheran in a 13-7 victory over Southwestern, clinching the three-game weekend series. 

Preston Witt put Southwestern on the board first, hitting a two-out, two-RBI double down the right-field line to score Ted Lobkowicz and Maxwell Mims, who opened the first inning with back-to-back singles. 

Texas Lutheran loaded the bases on a leadoff single, hit batter, and walk to open the bottom of the inning, setting the stage for a sacrifice fly from Tyler Cauley to score Caleb Maly, then a three-run home run by Joe Jimenez to clear the bases and give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead. 

The Pirates cut the deficit to one the next inning, with Mims hitting an RBI-single to score Lance Kruse. Texas Lutheran got the run back in the third on Post's first home run. Mims tied the game in the fourth on a two-run home run, scoring Hayden Craig, who reached on a single. 

Southwestern took a brief lead in the top of the fifth on Jacob Tanner's leadoff home run. Post responded in the bottom of the inning with his second home run of the game to retake the lead for Texas Lutheran. 

Harris tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single to center, scoring Mims, who led the inning off with a walk. Texas Lutheran put the game away in the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs on five hits and taking advantage of three errors. 

Nolan Tenpas took the mound for Texas Lutheran in the eighth and retired the next six Southwestern hitters to end the game.

Mims led the Pirates with three hits in four at-bats, driving in three RBIs and scoring three runs. Tanner hit 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Benjamin Ludwig started on the mound for Southwestern, pitching six innings and surrendering 10 earned runs in the loss. 

Southwestern dropped to 14-14, including 9-5 in conference play. Texas Lutheran is now 19-8 with a 10-1 conference record. Both teams will conclude the series tomorrow at noon.
