Pirates Wrap Up Season

Pirates Wrap Up Season

The Pirates were ready to go from the very beginning, putting 2 runs on the board in the top of the 1st.  Brett Martin and Nick Ashford both singled in runs to make the score 2-0.  However, in the bottom of the 1st, two hit by pitches and a home run would allow Millsaps to take a 3-2.  After the rough beginning, starting pitcher Matt Stuart would settle in and not allow another run over the next four innings.  The Pirates would take the lead back wit 3 runs inthe third inning.  After a rocketed double by Chris Lowry and a single by Brett Martin, clean up hitter Johnny Gavrel drove a ball over the wall to deep left field for his 8th home run of the year.  The Pirates were not done scoring yet.  In the 4th, after Greg Thumm reached on a fielder's choice, Chris Lowry blasted a no-doubt home run to left field.  The 7-3 lead would remain until the bottom of the 7th when 3 Southwestern relief pitchers would give up 6 runs on just 4 hits.  Down 7-3, the Pirates offense wasn't going to just roll over and die.  In the 8th Southwestern scored 5 runs on 5 hits.  After back to back singles by Ashford and Betts and a sacrifice bunt by Nate Shipp, pinch hitter lance Gottardy notched an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left.  With 2 outs in the inning, Charlie Garrett would single, Chris Lowry would walk, Brett Martin would single, Johnny Gavrel would walk, and Pat Keenan would double to  right field.  The lead was not returned to Southwestern, 12-9.

The bottom of the 8th saw the Majors take the lead for good on a 3 run home run.  2 first year relievers for the Pirates allowed 5 runs on just 4 hits in the inning.  Millsaps would take the final regular season game of the year 14-12.   The Pirates racked up 12 runs on 15 hits.  8 of the starters for the Pirates had at least one hit in the game.  The three senior starters each totalled at least 2 hits in the game, lead by Pirate fielder Pat Keenan who went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI.

The season wraps up with the Pirates finishing at 17-20 on the year with a stellar 14-7 mark at home.  After a season that saw 4 Pirates upper classman and starters miss significant time (Brantley Freeman, Chris Lowry, Kyle Belski, and Nate Shipp) due to injuries and the struggles of youth, the Pirates were still able to battle and hold of elimination from playoff contention until the last day of the season.
