Pirates Drop Heartbreaker

Pirates Drop Heartbreaker

The Pirates jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on a 2 RBI single by Cray Betts that drove in Johnny Gavrel and Patrick Keenan.  The Pirates would add to the lead in the 5th thanks to a Brett Martin RBI single to drive in Greg Thumm.  The Majors would start to chip away in the 6th by scoring a single run on a sacrifce fly.

Chris Churchwell took the hill for the Pirates and was outstanding.  The senior finished off his career with a complete game, allowing just 3 earned runs while striking out 3.  Millsaps would start to get to the starter late in the game.  The 7th inning saw the Majors add another run on a fielders choice to bring the game to 3-2.  In the bottom of the 8th the Majors brought 2 across thanks to a throwing error and a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the 9th the Pirates would load the bases with one out thanks to 2 singles and a walk, but the majors would enduce the game ending double play.  The loss drops the Pirates to 17-19 on the year and 8-11 in conference.  The loss combined with a Hendrix win drops Southwestern out of playoff contention with just 1 game left in the season.  The Pirates will conclude their season Sunday against Millsaps at 1 pm.
