Pirates Drop 2 in Tough Road Series

Pirates Drop 2 in Tough Road Series

The Southwestern Baseball team lost 2 of 3 this weekend in a tough conference series with Hendrix College.  Two of the three games went in to extra innings and all games were decided by 3 runs or less.

Game one on Friday saw the Pirates lose 5-4 in extra innings.  The Pirates had a 3-2 lead going into the 7th but we unable to hold on and were forced to go extras.  After scoring one in the top of the 9th, the Warriors answered with 2 in the bottom of the 9th, taking the game.  Senior pitcher Alan Lowry started on the mound for the Pirates and gave up 3 earned runs in 7 strong innings of work.

Game two was a similiar game with different results.  In the game the Pirates would jump out to an early lead in the 6th, 8-4.  A big inning by the Warriors in the 6th would tie th game at 8 and send the game into extra innings once again where a Johnny Gavrel single and a Cray Betts walk would drive in 2 runs to take the game 10-8.  Jason Stading earned the win for the Pirates after going 3.1, giving up only 1 hit and striking out 3.

The Pirates would drop game 3 10-7 after mounting a big comeback in the top of the 9th.  After starting hot and scoring 3 runs in the first 2 innings, the Pirates hit an unlucky streak that saw several hard hit line drives go to Hendrix players instead of finding gaps.  After several bad breaks on offense and defense, the Pirates found themselves in a 10-4 hole going into the top of the 9th.  After a Greg Thumm single and a Zac Cleveland walk, Nate Shipp drove home a run on a double to make the score 10-4.  Brett Martin would add to the score with a 2 RBI single but the Pirates were not able to pull any closer.

The Pirates had several offensive standouts for the weekend.  Brett Martin was 8-14 on the weekend with2 walks, 3 RBI, a double, and a run scored.  Johnny Gavrel was 4-12 with 3 walks, 4 RBI, 3 runs scored, and a home run.  Greg Thumm was 4-11 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI.  Nate Shipp was 6-13 with 3 walks, 3 doubles, 5 runs scored, and 2 RBI.  Patrick Keenan had 3 RBI and 3 walks on the weekend.

The Pirates fall to 8-10 on the season and 4-6 in SCAC play.  Southwestern travels to Belton on Tuesday for a 2 pm game with UMHB and then returns home for a double header starting at 3 pm with Cardinal Stritch.
