Southwestern scored three goals in the final three minutes but fell 9-8 to Wentworth Institute of Technology at home Saturday night.

Wentworth controlled the first quarter with three goals from Ryan Coakley. Matthew Montagne scored to put the count at 3-1. Jordan Riggs added another Pirate goal to open the second quarter, but Wentworth responded with a goal a minute later to keep WIT's lead at two.

Parker Rankin scored, assisted by Jackson Timian, with just under three minutes to play in the second quarter to send Southwestern into the break down by just one, 4-3.

Wentworth started the second half as they did the game with two goals to extend their lead to three, 6-3. Jake Ham scored unassisted to bring the count to 6-4 heading into the fourth quarter.

Wentworth scored three including two man-up goals while Southwestern posted one in the first 10 minutes of the fourth quarter, setting up the intense finish. Matt Amerie started the run, scoring with 2:54 and assisted by Montagne. Montagne then scored himself 20 seconds later and kept SU's hopes alive. Southwestern won the faceoff and got two good looks at goal before Everett Barger, assisted by Montagne, scored to pull the Pirates within one, 9-8.

Montagne had a great look at goal that seemed to be the equalizer, but Adam Dufault made the save of the game to seal the win for the Leopards.

The Pirates had two fewer shots but won five more faceoffs and each team had 35 ground balls. Wentworth converted on 4 of 9 man-up opportunities while Southwestern was able to take advantage of just one of five.

Montagne led the way with two goals and three assists while Charlie Fisher garnered the loss in goal with 13 saves. Christopher Adams had a huge game defensively, recording four caused turnovers.

Southwestern falls to 4-5 on the year while WIT starts the season at 2-0. SU remains at home to face Lasell on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
