Men's Lacrosse Rebounds Against Birmingham-Southern

Men's Lacrosse Rebounds Against Birmingham-Southern

Birmingham, Alabama - The Southwestern Pirates played a complete game, both offensively and defensively, to secure a 14-5 win over the Birmingham-Southern Panthers to advance to 1-1 on the season.

The Pirates' finished out their weekend on a high note as they marched into Krulak Stadium looking to rebound from a loss just two days before. They scored five goals in the first quarter and never looked back.

The goals came early and often with Cody Foster scoring off the first faceoff of the game. On the ensuing possession, Tyler Johnson netted a right handed shot on the run to put the Pirates' up 2-0. Not long after, Matt Caldwell finished a low angle shot on the wing to make it 3-0. Transfer Tommy Dyson would get in on the scoring to record his first goal of the season, securing a 5-1, Pirates' lead at the end of the first.

The Panthers' would score back-to-back goals cutting the lead to 6-3 halfway through the second quarter. But Tyler Johnson took over, giving himself a first half hat trick and a Pirate lead of 8-3 going into halftime.

Goaltender Nate Blair denied the Panthers all afternoon, putting up a 72 percent save percentage and 13 saves. Blair did it all, even adding an assist off of a seventy-five yard pass to Cade McDonald for a goal.

The Pirates' defense negated the Panthers' offense, flying around the field and rarely allowing the Panthers' to score in settled 6v6. Defenseman Will Thompson was a clearing machine, ensuring the Pirates' offensive possessions. Thompson also recorded five ground balls while long-stick midfielder Aidan Gildea had three and defensive midfielders Ryan Sambogna and Matt Minnick both had two.

In the second half, the Pirates' relied on a balanced offense with three goals coming from the attack and three goals coming from the midfield. McDonald had two goals in the second half with senior Nick Doxey putting up two on the day as well. First-year Matthew Sganga, Tommy Saueressig, and Tyler Johnson all put up a goal in the second half to secure the 14-5 win.

The Pirates will travel to Shreveport, Louisiana to take on the Centenary College Gents next Sunday, Feb. 20th at 1 p.m.
