Men’s lacrosse off to historic start with 15-8 win over Millsaps

GEORGETOWN, Texas – After a dominating 15-8 win over Millsaps College, Southwestern is off to their best start ever and remain unbeaten at 3-0 on the year.

Millsaps started the scoring with a goal five minutes into the game, but Southwestern quickly responded with a man-up goal by Jeremy Tufnell, assisted by Austin Fox. The teams traded goals as the game remained deadlocked 3-3 at the end of the first.

Kyle Anderson scored one minute into the second quarter to give SU a brief lead, but the Majors pushed two more home to briefly take the lead back. Southwestern dominated the rest of the half, going on a 7-1 run to close the first up 11-6, including a goal by Carter Cowan, assisted by Timian, with two-men down.

Tyler Downing and Matt Zagurski added one goal each to open the third quarter and Millsaps took advantage of a pair of man-up opportunities to cut into SU's lead 13-8. The run was short lived, however, as the Pirate defense took over and offense punched home two more goals to arrive at the 15-8 final.

Southwestern won the shot count 40-24 and collected 44 groundballs while Millsaps managed just 18. Cowan and Tyler Downing had three goals each to lead the scoring while Fox had a team high four assists in the win. Daniel Donovan earned his third win with three saves on nine shots in 26 minutes. Charlie Fisher closed out the game in goal and notched two saves on four shots.

The Pirates had a staunch defense and was led by Timian and Daniel Ayala who caused three turnovers each. Dakota Skinner led with five groundballs while Timian and Kyle Anderson added four each.

Southwestern puts their perfect record on the line as they hit the road for the first time this season to face Colorado College in Dallas, Texas at the Patriot Cup on February 28th at 6 p.m.
