Benedictine tops Pirates in Illinois

Southwestern was outscored 8-2 in the first half and fell 13-5 to Benedictine in Lisle, Ill. on Friday afternoon.

Benedictine started the scoring with a goal a minute and a half into the game but Brandon Hanley had the answer to tie the at one. Benedictine quickly regained the lead, however, and scored six straight to lead the Pirates 7-1 with three and a half to play. Matt Amerie got one back on a man-up goal, but Benedictine got the goal right back and sent the Pirates into the locker room down 8-2.

The second half was much of the same as Benedictine opened the third quarter with a goal and never lost the lead to hand SU the 13-5 loss.

Southwestern trailed just 27-22 in shots but committed five more turnovers and won just four of 21 faceoffs. Hanley and Amerie led the Pirates with two goals apiece in the loss. Benedictine's Eric Orndorf led all scorers with four goals and two assists.

The loss drops SU to 4-7 on the year while Benedictine improves to 7-2 overall. Southwestern remains in the Illinois to face Elmhurst College at noon on Sunday.
