Men’s Lacrosse Leaves Calvin No Chance, Advances to 4-1

Earlier in the week the Calvin University Knights played a neutral site game at Varsity Field against the Piedmont Lions, a game which the Knights were able to edge out a 9-8 victory. Although the Pirates' won by a margin of six goals against Piedmont, the game was highly contested until late in the second half when the Pirates' were able to pull away. One would assume the Knights would put up a battle. However, this was not the case.

The Pirates' came out firing on all cylinders. Hudson Bearden has made a habit of helping other Pirates' score off his face-offs and today was no different. On the opening face, Bearden went down and passed to a cutting Nick Doxey to make it 1-0 in the first 10 seconds of the game. From then on, it was all Pirates' in the first quarter. They scored six goals while the Knights only managed one. Doxey had two goals with a host of other Pirates' scoring as well.

Penalties hindered the Pirates' in the second with only Jr. Justin Macha and Cade McDonald finding the back of the net, ending the half 8-3. Macha concluded with two goals while McDonald ended with four, bringing his season total to 15.

The Pirates' defense had an outstanding performance, only allowing three goals in three quarters of play. Sr. Aidan Gildea hounded Calvin players all afternoon, finishing with multiple ground balls and caused turnovers. Matt Minnick, Tyler Santos and Andrew York made it difficult for the Knights as well as they each had caused turnovers.

Five more goals from the Pirates' in the third quarter just about sealed the deal, allowing them to coast to a 18-6 win. Other notable performances include Fr. Matthew Sganga who had three goals and Goaltender Nate Blair who ended the first half with a 67 percent save percentage before Fr. Carter Woods took over to end the game.

The Pirates' have a quick turn-around, traveling to Memphis, TN to take on the Rhodes College Lynx on Monday, March 7th at 2 PM.
