Seven Southwestern Baseball Players Receive Conference Recognition

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) announced its 2021 All-SCAC Baseball Team, naming seven Southwestern players among its two teams and honorable mentions. 

Pitcher Travis Harvey was named one of the three All-SCAC First Team pitchers. The left-handed sophomore out of Cedar Park, Texas, compiled a 3-2 record. His 3.68 ERA was third in the conference. Harvey threw 46 strikeouts in 36.2 innings pitched, leading the league in strikeouts per nine innings with 11.29. He posted a career-high 14 strikeouts in seven innings against the University of St. Thomas on March 13 and won two SCAC Pitcher of the Week awards. 

Freshman Maxwell Mims was named the SCAC Newcomer of the Year and All-SCAC Second Team. The outfielder out of Friendswood, Texas, finished top five in the SCAC in multiple categories, including batting average (.383, fifth), slugging percentage (.609, fourth), stolen bases (18, third), sacrifice flies (5, third), and triples (5, second). Mims also hit four home runs, drove in 37 RBIs, and scored 38 runs. In addition, he was named to the D3Baseball.com Team of the Week for his performances in five games from April 12-18, hitting .529 with three home runs and 13 RBIs. 

Benjamin Ludwig, a junior pitcher out of Austin, Texas, also earned All-SCAC Second Team honors. Ludwig finished the regular season with a 5-2 record, throwing three complete games with a 4.88 ERA. He also finished fifth in the conference in strikeouts (48), sixth in strikeouts per game (8.36), and was named the SCAC Player of the Week for Week 8 for a complete-game victory over Centenary. 

Jake Harris, Ted Lobkowicz, Daniel Montgomery Jr., and Trey Schwarz were named All-SCAC Honorable Mention. 

In his first season, Harris hit .333, drove in 19 RBIs, and scored 19 runs with two doubles, a triple, and a home run. Lobkowicz hit a career-high .296 in his third season, drawing 23 walks for a .426 on-base percentage. He earned 16 RBIs and scored 31 runs. Montgomery hit .273 with three home runs, 22 RBIs, with 29 runs in his final season. Schwarz went 2-1 with three saves in 15 appearances out of the bullpen, striking out 19 in 22 innings pitched with a 4.09 ERA. 

Southwestern finished with its third consecutive regular season with a winning record at 18-17, going 13-5 in conference play. The Pirates won five three-game conference weekend series, earning the third seed in the SCAC Tournament.
