Southwestern University Pirates pitcher Austin Smith was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week for his performance on Saturday, March 8 against the Middlebury College Panthers.

In his first extended action of the season, Smith threw five scoreless, no-hit innings with 10 strikeouts and only three walks in the Pirates' 3-2 victory.

Smith opened the game by striking out three of the first four batters he faced. The junior from Cedar Park, Texas then struck out the side in the third and fourth innings. In the fifth, he induced a 4-6-3 double play after walking the leadoff batter and closed the inning by inducing a groundout to shortstop.

With the win, Smith moved to 1-1 on the season. In eight innings pitched over three appearances, Smith has allowed just one hit and one unearned run with 14 strikeouts and six walks for a 0.00 ERA. He is the second Pirate to win Pitcher of the Week honors this season, joining teammate John Sparks, who won the award in Week 2.
