
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Southwestern University baseball team could not avoid the sweep against No. 5 Trinity on SCAC Opening Weekend, falling 6-2 in game one before dropping a 13-0 (7) contest on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, junior Colby Schmidt homered in second to tie it after Trinity took a 1-0 lead in the first and Southwestern took a 2-1 advantage in the sixth inning on a sac fly by freshman Seth Sparks. Trinity got two back in the bottom half of the sixth and added three runs in the eighth to pull away for a 6-2 win.
Sophomore Colton Hunter (L, 1-2) put together a quality start, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Brendan Meyer (W, 4-0) got the win for Trinity while Jeff Lonnecker (S, 1) earned the save.
Sophomore Byron Dowdell II went 2-for-4 on the day while Schmidt and Sparks each had a hit and a RBI. Sophomore Daniel Montgomery Jr. was 1-of-3 with a run scored.
In the second game, Trinity score five in the first and six in the fourth as they pulled away and completed the sweep with a 13-0 win in seven innings.
Freshman Jacob Frankel (L, 1-1) took the loss while four different pitchers saw action for the Pirates. James Nittoli (W, 4-0) got the win for the Tigers.
Freshman Aaron Clark was 1-for-2 while senior Jason McCormack went 1-for-1 with a walk.
Southwestern falls to 6-8 overall and 0-3 in SCAC play. They will look to rebound on Wednesday as they return home to Rockwell Field. to take on the University of Chicago in a non-conference contest beginning at 6 PM.
