Baseball Can't Recover from Slow Start as Millikin Evens Series

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University baseball team saw their three game winning streak come to a close as the Millikin Big Blue used big innings early and often to knock off the Pirates 19-7 on Saturday afternoon at Rockwell Field.

Julian Gutierrez got things rolling with one swing of the bat in the first as he cranked a grand slam over the right field wall for a 4-0 lead. The Big Blue scored five more in the second inning and held a 9-0 lead going into the bottom of the second.

The Pirates slowly began to chip away as a RBI double from Seth Sparks in the second, a RBI ground out by junior Colby Schmidt in the third, and RBIs from freshmen Ryan Baranowski and Austin Smith made it a 9-4 game.

However, Millikin scored six in the fifth and four in the sixth to extend the lead to 19-4 as they did not look back. Southwestern added three in the ninth, but it was not nearly enough as the Big Blue evened the series.

Schmidt finished 2-for-5 with a triple, a RBI, and two runs scored while Spark and sophomore Byron Dowdell II each had a double with Dowdell scoring a run. Montgomery, Baranowski, and sophomore Daniel Montgomery Jr. all scored a run while freshman Jase Amaya checked in late and drew a walk while also scoring a run.

Six pitchers went to the mount for the Pirates while sophomore Colton Hunter (1-1) saddled with the loss after two complete. Smith and Montgomery both put together impressive innings as they each pitching one and struck out three batters.

Gutierrez led the Big Blue, going 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored while Devin Crews was 3-for-5 with a triple, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Logan Talkington (2-0) earned the win after pitching five complete.

The two teams will square off in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon at 12 PM.
