GEORGETOWN, Texas - Jeremy Rice faced one batter over the minimum and fired a nine-inning no-hitter, leading Southwestern to a 21-0 victory over Blackburn in Friday night's series opener at Rockwell Field.

Rice (2-3) retired the first 16 batters he faced, but R.J. Rios broke up the perfect-game bid after reaching base on an errant throw. The right-hander then breezed through the final 11 hitters. The final out came on Brandon Smith's pop up that was gloved by Ben Little behind the mound.

Rice, a senior from Houston, threw 113 pitches, including 80 strikes, and struck out seven batters.

It marked Southwestern's first no-hitter since Brett Marcom accomplished the feat in a seven-inning win over Schreiner on March 8, 2014.

Rice was backed up by an explosive Pirate offense.

The Bucs pounded out 22 hits, which started on Colby Schmidt's leadoff homer in the first inning.

Schmidt was 5 for 7 with three RBIs, while Ethan Hallmark went 4 for 7 with a double, a grand slam and seven RBIs.

The Pirates (9-11), who have won three consecutive games, will take on the Beavers (1-7) in a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

NOTES:
• Six of Southwestern's starters registered multiple hits in the win.
• The Pirates recorded 10 extra-base hits in the series opener (7 doubles/1 triple/2 home runs).
• Daniel Montgomery Jr. drew five bases on balls in six trips to the plate on Friday. It was the most by a Pirate since John Carpenter accomplished the feat during the 1990 season.
