Polasek's complete-game effort not enough for Pirates on Friday night

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Tyler Polasek went the distance and gave up only one run, but it was enough to allow No. 24 Texas Lutheran to defeat Southwestern, 1-0, on Friday night at Rockwell Field.

Polasek scattered five hits in an 86-pitch effort (57 strikes). He also struck out two batters on the night.

However, the league-leading Bulldogs (24-11, 14-2 SCAC) pushed across the deciding score in the fourth inning.

Alex Gutierrez and Justin Law started the frame with back-to-back singles, which broke up Polasek's no-hit bid. After a groundout allowed both runners to move into scoring position, Colby Schrade singled through the middle of the infield, which sent Gutierrez plateward. Law was stranded at third base after Polasek induced a 4-6-3 double play off Lincoln Baylor's bat to end the panel.

The Pirates (13-23, 8-8 SCAC) managed only four hits against Nathan Malinovsky. The right-hander fanned eight and walked two in his complete-game victory.

Southwestern had its best chance to score come in the final inning.

Will Cates reached on a one-out single and then stole both second and third bases. However, Malinovsky picked up a strikeout to quell the threat and close out the contest.

Cates ended with two hits to pace the Bucs, including a double.

The two teams will close out the series with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Prior to the twinbill, the Pirates will honor nine student-athletes as a part of Senior Day at Rockwell Field.
