Southwestern rallies for series win at Austin College on Saturday

SHERMAN, Texas – The Southwestern University baseball team launched three home runs and completed a doubleheader sweep of Austin College on Saturday at Baker Field. The Pirates also claimed the series against the Kangaroos.

Southwestern (9-19, 5-4 SCAC) won the opening tilt 9-6 and then rallied for a 10-6 victory in the series finale.

The Pirates will host Mary Hardin-Baylor in a non-conference game on Tuesday at Rockwell Field. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.


GAME ONE

Southwestern scored three runs in the third inning, but Austin College answered with five in the bottom half of the frame.

After both teams scored a run in the fifth, the Pirates plated three more in the sixth and two in the eighth to pull away for good.

Ethan Luna drove in three runs, while Will Cates hit a solo home run to lead the offensive charge.

Meanwhile, Hayden Holley (2-3) came out of the bullpen to toss 4.1 scoreless innings. Holley, who picked up the win, allowed five hits and struck out three.


GAME TWO

The Pirates trailed 4-0 through four innings. However, Southwestern scored runs in each of the final five panels, including six between the eighth and ninth innings, to overtake the 'Roos.

The Pirates' comeback picked up in the eighth, as the squad tallied three runs.

Two came on Ben Little's ground-rule double, while Tyler Bludau also drove in a run on a single.

Southwestern added three more in the final stanza, including two on wild pitches.

Bludau finished 4-for-5 with a double, a homer and two RBIs. Cates hit his third home run of the season and stole two bases.

Matt Litz (1-1) received the win after holding Austin College scoreless in the final 2.2 frames. The right-hander also allowed only one hit and fanned four.
