Southwestern Survives Shootout

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern survived a shootout with Hardin Simmons winning 12-10 on Tuesday night.

The Pirates broke open the scoring in the bottom of the third inning.  Robert Wehman led off with a single up the middle and Jared Bogosian followed with a walk.  Jason McCormack loaded the bases after reaching on an error as he bunted to the pitcher.  Will Cates followed with a RBI single to right center field.  Chase Allen later hit a sacrifice fly that scored McCormack and Cates crossed the plate after an errant throw.  Austyn Laird then hit a two run homer that cleared the fence in left field to give Southwestern the 5-0 lead.

Hardin Simmons cut it to a 5-4 game in the top of the fourth inning that included a 2 run homer to left field by Cody Berryman.

Southwestern added a run in the bottom of the fourth to bolster the lead to 6-4.

The Cowboys capitalized on several walks and a pair hits to overtake the Pirates 8-6 in the top of the fifth inning.

The lead changed hands in the bottom half of the fifth inning as the Pirate offense surged again.  Allen, Laird, and Ben Little loaded the bases with two outs.  Wehman drew a walk to bring in a run and then Bogosian hit a two RBI single to right field.  After McCormack was hit by a pitch, Cates hit a two RBI double to center field to put the Bucs up 11-8.

Hardin Simmons hit a pair of RBI doubles in the top of the 7th to narrow the gap to 11-10.  However, that was as close as the visiting team would get as Southwestern added an insurance run in the bottom half for the eventual 12-10 final score.

Will Cates led the Pirate offense by going 3-4 with a double, a triple, 4 runs batted in, scored twice, and drew a walk.  Austyn Laird also went 2-5 with a 2 run homer.  Gunner Vaught collected his first win of the season and Riley Wayland earned his 6th save of the year. 

Southwestern moves to 15-13 and hits the road to face Texas Lutheran on Friday, April 10th at 6pm.
