Cowboys end Pirates win streak

GEORGETOWN – Hardin-Simmons University snapped a four-game winning streak by the Southwestern University baseball team Tuesday night taking an 8-2 win at Rockwell Field in non-conference action.

Southwestern (10-23) was shut down by solid pitching from Hardin-Simmons (12-15) as the Pirates only managed four hits in the loss.

The Pirates were able to work out of jams throughout most of the game as the Cowboys stranded 16 base runners; however 13 walks from seven different pitchers came back to haunt the Pirates.

A two-run double from Chase Allen put the Pirates up early as Clayton Sparks and Tyler Bludau singled and doubled. Sparks had singled and Bludau doubled before scoring as Bludau recorded two of the Pirates three hits.

Pirate starter Brett Marcom pitched just three innings before Tyler Poi hit a batter, walked another and allowed a hit to load the bases in the top of the fourth. HSU scored three runs on three hits to take a 4-2 lead before adding insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

The Cowboys scored four runs in those two innings with the benefit of just one base hit.

Brandon Bollinger pitched five innings for the Cowboys as he allowed just three hits and the only two runs for Southwestern. The Cowboy bullpen was also solid allowing just one hit and one walk in the final four innings.

Southwestern returns to the diamond Friday as they continue to step outside of conference play against Emory University. The Pirates and Eagles will start a three-game series Friday at 2 p.m. (CST) with one game each day.
