GEORGETOWN, Texas - #4 Austin College holds their seed over #5 Southwestern, defeating them 4-3 in the first game of the 2013 SCAC Baseball Championships.
Southwestern jumped out to an early lead in the top of the 2nd. Jeff Glasgow led off with a single to right center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Herriage. Then Will Burks crushed a triple over the center fielder's head to bring home Glasgow. Josh Presnall followed with a sacrifice fly to score Burks from third to put the Pirates up 2-0.
Austin College broke through in the bottom of the 3rd. Travis Gibson hit a one out double to left field and moved to third on a single by Austin Vaughan. Gibson later scored on a wild pitch to cut it to a 2-1 game.
The Roos tied the game in the 6th inning. Tyler Applequist singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a single by Colt Herron. Then Mason Leech hit a RBI single up the middle to knot the game at 2-2.
Gibson scored again for Austin College in the 7th. He singled, stole second, and took third on a wild pitch. Vaughn doubled to right field, scoring Gibson to take the 3-2 lead.
The Pirates put together a rally in the 8th to keep their chances alive. Zachary Lynch drew a two out walk and was replaced on first by Dickson Wharton. Wharton advanced to second on a single through the right side by Glasgow. Herriage reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Wharton to cross the plate and even the score at 3-3.
Austin College took advantage of getting to bat in the bottom of the 9th. Josh Coughennower and Applequist drew a pair of walks to lead off the frame. Then Herron was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mason Leech reached on a fielder's choice as the Pirate defense opted to go for the out at the plate. However, there was an errant throw from the third baseman to home that allowed Coughennower to score the winning run and end the game 4-3.
Southwestern was led offensively by Jeff Glasgow, who went 3-3, with a walk and scored. Austin College was led by Travis Gibson, who went 2-4, with a double, a stolen base, and scored twice. Colt Herron earned the win for the Roos.
Austin College advances to play Centenary tomorrow at 3:30pm, while Southwestern awaits the loser of Trinity and Dallas and will play them at 7pm tomorrow at Rockwell Field, in Georgetown, Texas.
