Baseball Dealt Loss by Crusaders

Baseball Dealt Loss by Crusaders

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern lost to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday afternoon 12-1.  The Pirates were never able to get anything going as the Crusaders controlled most of the game.

In the top of the second, UMHB's Young hit a one out single down the left field line and later stole second base.  Yan followed with a single and tried to take second base, forcing a rundown situation.  With the rundown taking place, Young took off for home and scored on a play at the plate.  Yan made it to second base with the throw going home.  Yan advanced to third on an infield single from Lynn and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Emerson for the 2-0 lead.

The lone run for the Pirates came in the bottom of the second inning.  Nate Shipp hit a leadoff single to left field.  Then Jay Sterling lined a one out single to left center and advanced Shipp over to third.  Shipp scored from third on a passed ball by the catcher to cut it to a 2-1 game.  Unfortunately for the 'Bucs, that would be as close as they would get in this game.

UMHB scored three runs on six hits in the third, including a two run homer from Embry.  They added two more runs in the fourth to make it 7-1 in favor of the Crusaders.

The Cru's Florack was hit by a pitch to start off the sixth.  Josh Fredrick scored Florack with a home run to left field to extend the UMHB lead to 9-1.

Southwestern had some hope in the bottom of the inning.  Zach Lynch walked on four straight pitches with one out.  Shipp advanced Lynch to second with a single through the left side.   However, the Crusaders got Heath Spencer to ground into the six-four-three double play to end the inning.

Lynn hit a leadoff single to center field to start the seventh for UMHB.  Emerson followed with a walk to advance Lynn to second base.  Florack homered to left field to bring in all the runners for the 12-1 final score.

The Pirates were led by Nate Shipp who went 2 for 3 and scored a run on the day.  Southwestern's record now stands at 4-11 following the loss.  UMHB advances to 6-4 on the year.

The Pirates return to conference play this weekend as they square off against the University of Dallas in a doubleheader this Sunday, March 4th beginning at 12:00pm.  Both games will be played at Rockwell Field on the Southwestern Campus in Georgetown, Texas.
