Gavrel's Walk-off Single Gives Pirates Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Johnny Gavrel's (pictured) single in the bottom of the 9th drove in Cray Betts for the game-winning run in the final game of the Southwestern/Millsaps series on Sunday.  The Pirates defeated the Majors 7-6 to move to 3-4 on the year and 1-2 in the SCAC while Millsaps falls to 7-1, 2-1.

Southwestern struck first as Betts brought in Nate Shipp for the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Millsaps added one run in the second and third innings to take a brief 2-1 lead after three.

The Pirates tied it up in the fifth on a homerun by Shipp. The Majors had a big seventh inning, scoring four runs but SU came roaring back with four runs of their own on four hits to keep the game tied 6-6.

After a scoreless eighth Southwestern made quick work defensively, retiring the first three batters in order and headed into the bottom half of the inning to close out the game.

With two outs Betts reached on an error to keep the inning alive and advanced to second on a wild pitch, putting him in scoring position for Gavrel who took full advantage of the situation. Gavrel found a hole in the outfield and a hustling Betts made it safely home for the game winner.

Shipp and Gavrel both posted three hit afternoons with Shipp recording 2 RBI's and three runs scored and Gavrel also having 2 RBI's including the game winner.

Chris Churchwell threw a great game as the starting pitcher, going 6.2 innings allowing six runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out seven. Aaron Garza came in relief in the sixth and scattered three hits while Alan Lowry threw a fantastic ninth inning to keep the game tied and earn the win. MC's Elmore garnered the loss.

Southwestern remains at home to face Hardin Simmons University on Tuesday.
