PIRATES HOLD AUSTIN COLLEGE SCORELESS IN FINAL GAME OF SERIES

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Brantley Freeman tossed eight shutout innings to lead the Southwestern baseball team to a 7-0 win over Austin College on Sunday afternoon at Rockwell Field.

Southwestern improved to 14-14 (7-5 SCAC) with the victory after winning the series 2-1. Austin College drops to 8-13 (3-10 SCAC) with the loss.

After a scoreless first inning, the Pirates jumped on top in the second, scoring seven runs, the first four on RBI singles from Ricky Gomez, Nate Shipp, Todd Boone and Brent McMullen before a three-run homer from Michael Murphy, his first of the season, put Southwestern ahead 7-0.

Beginning in the third inning, Freeman and Austin College reliever Will Chermak shut the opposing offenses down, as the score remained 7-0 until the ninth inning, when Chris Webber relieved Freeman. Webber worked a scoreless ninth inning to seal the Pirates' 7-0 win.

Freeman picked up the victory after striking out six batters in his eight shutout innings. Christian Curtis incurred the loss for the Kangaroos.

Murphy led the Pirates with two hits and three RBI, Todd Boone notched three hits, and Gomez and Kyle Belski each notched a pair of hits.

Up next, the Pirates will face Concordia on Mar. 31 at 1 p.m. at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
