GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern baseball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night, as the Pirates dropped a 9-4 decision to Cardinal Stritch at Rockwell Field.
Southwestern falls to 12-13 (5-4 SCAC) on the year, while Cardinal Stritch improved to 2-16.
Cardinal Stritch got on the scoreboard early, as the Wolves scored a run in the first inning without the benefit of a hit, as three walks and an error gave the them a 1-0 lead.
The Wolves tacked on four runs in the second inning to increase their lead to 5-0, and two more in the fourth to push the lead to 7-0. The Pirates got on the scoreboard in the fifth on a two-run single from Nick Ashford to cut the deficit to 7-2.
Michael Murphy delivered an RBI double in the fifth to make it a 7-3 game, but the Wolves responded with two runs of their own in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 9-3.
Southwestern pushed a run across in the eighth inning, as a run scored on a double play to make it a 9-4 contest. The Pirates were unable to mount a rally in the ninth inning, sealing the game for Cardinal Stritch.
Justin Calvert picked up the win to improve to 1-1 for the Wolves, while Kyle Foreman incurred the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.
Nate Shipp led the Pirates with a 3-for-4 effort that included two runs scored, while Brent McMullen, Murphy and Ashford each recorded a pair of hits.
Up next, the Pirates host Austin College for a three-game set this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 21 at 2 p.m. at Rockwell Field.
