TOUGH EIGHTH INNING RESULTS IN PIRATE LOSS

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern baseball team dropped an offensive slugfest on Sunday to Trinity, as the Tigers posted a 16-5 win at Rockwell Field.

Trinity improved to 8-9 (3-3 SCAC) with the win, while Southwestern dropped to 9-11 (3-4 SCAC). The teams combined for 37 hits on the afternoon.

John Wooten put the Pirates ahead in the first inning with an RBI single and Brent McMullen followed with an RBI double to give Southwestern a 2-0 lead.

Trinity pushed across a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-2 lead, but Southwestern cut its deficit in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Kyle Belski to make it a 4-3 contest.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Matt Clark delivered a two-run double down the left-field line to give the Pirates a 5-4 lead, but the Tigers tied things up in the top of the seventh on an RBI double to even the score at 5-5.

Trinity reclaimed the lead in the eighth inning on a pair of RBI singles to take a 7-5 advantage and broke the game open in the ninth inning by scoring nine runs to extend its lead to 16-5. Southwestern went down in order in the ninth inning to give the Tigers the 16-5 victory.

Noah Solomon picked up the win in relief for Trinity, while Alan Lowry incurred the loss.

Michael Murphy posted a 4-for-5 day for the Pirates, while McMullen tallied three hits. Kevin Jackson led Trinity with a 6-for-7 effort that included four RBI.

Up next, the Pirates travel to face UT-Tyler on Tuesday, Mar. 10 at 3 p.m. in Abilene, Texas.
