Bill Bowman was promoted to head coach in May 2012, after serving the season as interim head coach for the 2012 season. He served as an assistant the previous two seasons. He was instrumental in making the men's lacrosse team a varsity program after great success coaching the club team for 12 years.

Bowman was named the SCAC Coach of the Year in 2014 after guiding the Pirates to their first winning season (10-5). In 2019, he guided the greatest offense in SCAC history, breaking SCAC single-season records for goals scored (297), assists (189), and points (486). In 2021, his team earned the program's first victory over a nationally-ranked program in an 11-10 victory over Illinois Wesleyan.

During Bowman's tenure, the Pirates have had 35 All-SCAC selections, including 19 First Team selections. The Pirates have had two SCAC Offensive Player of the Year winners in Tyler Downing (2014) and Zac Asbury (2019), and a Specialist of the Year (Hudson Bearden, 2021), Newcomer of the Year (Tyler Santos, 2019) and Defensive Player of the Year (Will Thompson, 2021).

In 2022, the Pirates moved to the Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) and Bowman was named HCLC Coach of the Year after leading the Pirates to tie the record for most wins in a regular season (10-4) and breaking the record for most wins during a full season (11-5). The Pirates received eight All-HCLC selections including the HCLC Offensive Player of the Year Cody Foster. Bowman has also overseen the programs first ever All-American selection with face-off man Hudson Bearden in 2022. In total, Bowman has coached 48 All-Conference selections.

Prior to the men's lacrosse team becoming a varsity program, Bowman amassed a 93-75 record coaching the club team, including a perfect 31-0 conference record covering five seasons that culminated in five Lone Star Alliance Division II Championships (2005-2009). In each year the Pirates were invited to the National Tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2008. Southwestern was ranked in the top 15 nationally from 2005 until their final season of club status in 2009, finishing ranked No. 9 in the nation.

Under Bowman’s tutelage, the club team had 14 All-Americans, 54 LSA All-Conference selections, including league MVP winners in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 as well as Offensive Player-of-the-Year in 2005, 2007 and 2008, and Defensive Player-of-the-Year in 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009. For all of his hard work, Bowman was named as Coach-of-the-Year twice, 2005 and 2008.
