Pirates Fade Late Against Undefeated Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. — In a closely contested game, Southwestern men's lacrosse surrendered the final four goals of the game in a 10-7 loss to Carthage in the first game of a two-game road trip. 

Carthage's Andrew Johnson opened the game with an unassisted goal within the first two minutes and never let up, scoring six for the game, including three consecutive goals within a four-minute span to close the third quarter and open the fourth, tying the game at 7-7 and then giving Carthage the 9-7 lead. 

Michael Stell added to the lead with 7:49 remaining, scoring unassisted while a man up to give Carthage its final three-goal lead. 

Johnson scored a pair of goals in the first, with Robert Dakan adding another, giving Carthage a 3-2 lead after the first 15 minutes of play. Southwestern found its rhythm in the second quarter, scoring the half's final three goals with two man-up goals by Matt Caldwell to take a 6-5 lead at the break. 

After both teams scored a goal in the opening five minutes, the defenses settled in, shutting the offenses down until Johnson scored an unassisted goal with 2:55 remaining in the third to tie the game. He added another goal off a feed from George Burchfield with 55 seconds remaining in the quarter to put Carthage ahead for good. Johnson scored again less than a minute into the fourth, and Stell added the final goal at the 7:49 mark. 

Nick Doxey led the Pirates with three points, scoring two goals and an assist. Caldwell added another pair of goals for Southwestern. Blake Sitterly had eight saves for the Pirates, facing 18 shots. Hudson Bearden won 13 of 21 face-off opportunities. Carthage outshot Southwestern 34-29, holding a 38-24 edge in ground balls, and forced 13 turnovers. 

Southwestern drops to 2-2 with the loss, Carthage remains undefeated at 5-0. The Pirates will play the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
