Murray Named as SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week

SUWANEE, Ga. - Donnie Murray, a senior goalkeeper on the men's lacrosse team from Chandler, Ariz., has been has been selected the SCAC Character & Community Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending March 18, 2012.

Murray has tirelessly worked while at Southwestern, giving his time and love to the cause for Brady Wein, a young boy back home in Arizona with Acute Myolegenous Leukemia, and his family.

Last year, Murray spearheaded Brady's Buc's bracelets that were sold with the proceeds going to help support the medical costs of the Wein family. This year, his support of the fight against cancer has stirred a "Green-out" game in cooperation with the HEADstrong Foundation.

The game against the University of Dallas, to be played on Saturday, April 21st at 1 p.m., will support the HEADstrong Foundation and its efforts to support those affected by blood cancer, as well as to support ways to try and eradicate it.

Lime green is recognized as the National Awareness Color denoting Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. HEADstrong was started by founder Nicholas Colleluori, a lacrosse player diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and is widely supported by the members of the lacrosse community throughout the nation.

"Cancer has in one way or another affected our lacrosse family," said Murray. "Teammates have family members and friends that are stricken with these diseases that unfortunately result in losing loved ones. Having a HEADstrong game not only allows our team to support this fight and awareness of all blood cancers, but allows us to spread the information to our campus community and more."
