Pirates Impress in First Ever SCAC Tournament

The Southwestern men's lacrosse team, anchored by goalie Chris O'Quain who posted an astounding 25 saves, were narrowly defeated 10-4 by SCAC-powerhouse Colorado College in the semifinals of the first SCAC Conference Tournament Friday evening. O'Quain's 25 saves was not only a new SU record, but ranks him in the top five in the nation this season.

SU's young Pirate squad had a perfect game plan in place to take on the seasoned Tigers and executed it to perfection, taking a two goal lead late in the first quarter. Gus Brunger got things started with 7:49 to go in the first on a man-up opportunity when Jamie Long found him for the first goal of the contest. Edward Williams, assisted by Alex Michael, added another goal just three minutes later.

Colorado was fortunate to get a goal just before the end of the quarter on a man-up opportunity of their own, scoring with just 13 seconds remaining to put the count at 2-1.

The Tigers blasted out of the gate at the start of the second, scoring just one minute into the quarter to tie the score 2-2. Three more CC goals gave the Tigers a three goal lead heading towards halftime. Williams, assisted by Brunger, punched one past CC's goalie with 1:32 left before halftime to cut the deficit to two goals, 5-3.

Long, assisted by Jeremy Cummins, got in the business of scoring and brought Southwestern within one goal, 5-4, four and a half minutes into the third quarter. Colorado's defense took over from there on out as Southwestern wasn't able to score an equalizer and the Tigers snuck five more past O'Quain for the 10-4 final.

Colorado led in every offensive category, taking 44 more shots (60-16), picking up 22 more groundballs (43-21) and winning 15 of the 19 faceoffs.

The Pirates end the season with a 7-9 overall record, 4-3 in the SCAC; a great showing for the second year program.
