Post-Season Play For The Pirates

San Antonio, TX- The Southwestern Pirates played the Schreiner Mountaineers in the opening round of the 2023 SCAC Softball Championships hosted by Trinity University on Friday, May 5th.  

The Pirates were looking for their first SCAC Tournament win since 2019 and came into the game with a 20-20 overall record. The Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead but after the second inning, the Pirates went ahead 3-2. A series of walks led to the Pirates getting on base and by the end of the third inning, the Pirates were now in control, winning 7-2. Madison Vela pitched a complete game and the Pirates went on to earn their victory versus Schreiner, 8-3. The Pirates now advanced in the Tournament and had to play University of St. Thomas later Friday evening. 

In between games, the SCAC All-Conference announcements were made and the Pirates had 9 players make the different teams. 

First Team:

Meghan McCarthy- First Base

Second Team:

Calle Collier- Second Base

Madison Vela- Pitcher

Samantha Saenz- Catcher

Honorable Mention: 

Sam Martinez- Outfield

Kathryn Dull- Designated Hitter

Erica Otto- Outfield

Riley Glenn-Millhouse- Short Stop

Brooke Yanta- Third Base

 

The Pirates lost 1-9 to the University of St. Thomas, who eventually went on to win SCAC Championship. The Pirates played Centenary on Saturday in an Elimination Game and lost a close one, 1-3.

Ultimately, Southwestern University closes out their season with a 21-23 record and loses just four seniors.
