Big Fifth Inning Costs Softball Against St. Thomas

HOUSTON — The University of St. Thomas Celts scored four runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Southwestern softball team 6-5 and complete the sweep of the three-game conference series.

Southwestern starting pitcher Paige Rasmussen walked the bases loaded in the first inning, setting up Brenna Ruether's RBI single to left field to give St. Thomas a 1-0 lead.

Jessey Nunez and Erica Otto reached on a walk and single in the top of the second, then both scored on a fielding and throwing error to give Southwestern a 2-1 lead. The Celts tied the game in the bottom of the inning, with Rasmussen walking Ariana Brown and surrendering a double to right field by Delayne Moreno to start.

Taylor McKenzie replaced Rasmussen with runners on second and third and no outs, ceding an RBI single by Lindsey Gonzalez.

Jodi Millhouse led the third inning off with an infield single. Then, Sam Saenz laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error, scoring Millhouse. St. Thomas loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Southwestern escaped unscathed with a force out at home and a strikeout to end the inning.

St. Thomas had two runners on with two outs and reeled off four runs. Brown opened the scoring binge with an RBI single. Then Moreno walked to load the bases, and Simmons walked to score a run. Gonzales followed with another RBI single, ending McKenzie's afternoon after 3.2 innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Madison Vela pitched the final 1.1 innings, striking out three with no hits or walks allowed.

Nunez and Otto reached on back-to-back singles to open the sixth inning. Then, after Brooke Yanta struck out swinging, Meghan McCarthy delivered a two-RBI double to center field.

Southwestern put two runners on with two outs in the top of the seventh inning but could not take advantage with a ground out to second ending the game.

The Pirates drop to 8-21 with a 3-9 conference record. Southwestern will host Centenary next weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday.
