Softball Unable To Complete Sweep, Losing 5-3 to Trinity

SAN ANTONIO — After defeating Trinity in both games on Saturday, Southwestern softball could not complete the three-game sweep, losing 5-3 to the Tigers.

Trinity broke the game open with a three-run second inning. Marina De la Luna set the tone with a solo blast over the left-field fence to lead off the inning. Then, Kristina Kish followed with a triple down the right-field line. After Diamond Elizondo groundout out, Madison Horn singled on a bunt, putting runners on the corners.

Sydney Watson followed with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Kish, and after Sammie Whitman popped up, Jessica Lloyd singled up the middle, scoring Horn for the 3-0 lead.

Abigail Miller added another run for Trinity in the bottom of the fourth, driving in Horn on an RBI single to left field.

The Pirates answered with an RBI-double by Jessey Nunez to right-center, scoring Brooke Yanta and Izzy Richey, who hit back-to-back singles.

Trinity struck again in the bottom of the sixth inning, capitalizing on an error allowing Whitman to reach first when Jordyn Williams hit an RBI single to left-center.

The Pirates picked up two quick outs in the top of the seventh inning before Maddie Mefford doubled to right-center, setting up Jodi Millhouse's RBI single through the right side. Erica Otto grounded out to end the game.

Millhouse was 2-for-3 for the Pirates, with Mefford, Otto, Richey, Yanta, and Nunez each hitting 1-for-3. Trinity totaled 13 hits, with four of its five runs earned.

Southwestern drops to 7-14 with a 3-5 conference record. The Pirates will host Texas Lutheran University next weekend, with the first game on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
