SHREVEPORT, LA — The Southwestern University softball team split their doubleheader against the Centenary College Ladies with a 4-0 loss and 6-3 win this afternoon.

Game 1 – Centenary 4, Southwestern 0

In the bottom of the first inning, Centenary scored the first run of the game with their catcher hitting a double. Then for the three next innings, both teams went scoreless, with Centenary leading by one run. But in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Ladies were able to find a rhythm and score three runs on the Pirates to extend their lead. Southwestern was unable to answer any of Centenary's runs, so the first game ended 4-0, with the Ladies taking the first win.

Game 2 – Southwestern 6, Centenary 3

In the second game, both Southwestern and Centenary started the first two innings slow as both defenses were quick to end the innings. But in the top of the third inning, Southwestern was able to gain runs on the Ladies. Kathryn Dull doubled to right field and earned two RBI's with Maddie Mefford and Rylee Rudloff scoring two runs. Next, Jessey Nunez singled up the middle, earning an RBI with Dull running in the third run for the Pirates. Before the end of the inning, Sam Martinez doubled to third to have Nunez score the inning's final run, giving the Pirates a 4-0 lead over Centenary. In the fourth inning, both teams went scoreless. But in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning, Centenary scored three runs and only needed one run to extend the game in the seventh. However, the Pirates extended their lead in the top of the seventh, with Dull hitting in Katelyn Francis to score. Then off of an error by the Ladies shortstop, Nunez reached first and earned an RBI, with Mefford scoring the sixth run for the Pirates before the inning ended. Centenary was unable to come back in the bottom of the seventh and the second game ended 6-3 with a Pirate win. Pirate pitcher Kinly McCaffrey earned four strikeouts and only allowed five hits.

Southwestern will quickly turn around and play Centenary tomorrow on Saturday, April 3, in their final game at noon.
