GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Southwestern University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader game against the Texas A&M San Antonio (TAMSA) Jaguars on Tuesday evening at the Taylor Sanders Softball Field.

Game 1 – Southwestern 4, Texas A&M San Antonio 3

Kinly McCaffrey held the Jaguars in the first inning from scoring any runs, however, TAMSA found their rhythm in the top of the second and scored two runs to lead the Pirates 2-0. McCaffrey doubled to the right field at the bottom of the third, advancing Tori Montemayor to third base so that when Katelyn Francis hit a sacrifice fly, Montemayor scored the first run for the Pirates.

The fourth, fifth and sixth innings went scoreless, with TAMSA in the lead by one run. In the top of the seventh inning, the Jaguars were able to score one more run making the score 3-0, leaving the Pirates one inning to try and catch up. In the bottom of the seventh, Southwestern battled to get three runners on base. As Montemayor came up to bat, she singled to left field for Paige Rassmusen to score. With Southwestern down one run, McCaffrey came up to bat with the bases loaded and doubled down the right field line allowing Izzy Richey and Rylee Rudloff to score the last two runs and win the game 4-3.

Game 2 – Texas A&M San Antonio 5, Southwestern 4

In the second game, both Southwestern and TAMSA went scoreless in the first two innings. The Jaguars broke the scoreless streak in the top of the third by scoring three runs. But the Pirates answered back in the bottom of the third with Richey hitting in Alex Fletes to score the first run. Then Madyson Runge reached on a fielder's choice to third base and McCaffrey scored the second run on a throwing error by the third basemen. Then once again, the Pirates took advantage of a Jaguars error by the catcher and Richey scored the third run needed to tie the game.

In the top of the fourth inning, TAMSA scored two more runs to take the lead by 5-3. McCaffrey was able to hit in Maddie Mefford in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Jaguars defense held the Pirates from scoring any more runs, ending the game in the bottom of the seventh 5-4.

The Southwestern Pirates softball team are now 7-8 in SCAC play and 10-16 overall. Up next, Southwestern will get back to conference play and host the Trinity University Tigers on Saturday, April 17 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and on Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. on Taylor Sanders Field.
