MARSHALL, Texas – The Southwestern University softball team could not overcome multiple big inning runs by East Texas Baptist University and lost 12-2 and 8-0 in doubleheader matches this Tuesday evening.

Southwestern is now 4-9 overall and 3-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play on the season.

Game 1 – ETBU 12, Southwestern 2

At the beginning of the game, ETBU was only able to score one run in the bottom of the first inning. The Pirates answered back when Kealie House singled to center field, earning an RBI with Morgan Potter scoring the first run for the Pirates to tie up the game. However, the Tigers took the second inning, adding seven runs to extend the lead for ETBU. In the next few innings, the Pirates were held by ETBU's defense from scoring any runs, while the Tigers picked up one run in the bottom of the third and then three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. In the top of the fifth inning, the Pirates were able to load up for the bases for Jessey Nunez to run in Rylee Rudloff to score Southwestern's second run of the game. But the next Pirates batter fouled out to give ETBU their third final out and end the game short in the fifth inning with the Tiger's winning 12-2.

Game 1 – ETBU 8, Southwestern 0

In the second game, the Tigers slowly tacked on runs in the first, second and third innings. While the Pirates were able to slow down ETBU from scoring any huge runs, The Pirates were shut out by ETBU's pitcher Ashley Croft, who pitched almost a perfect game. Tori Montemayor was the only Pirate to single off Croft's pitches in the top of the third inning but could not score a run for the Pirates. In the fourth inning, the Tigers scored three more runs to give them a seven-run lead and ETBU scored their final eighth run in the bottom of the fifth to end the game short with ETBU taking the second win 8-0.

Southwestern softball will take a break this upcoming weekend but will swing back into a doubleheader next Tuesday, March 23, to play the Concordia Texas Tornados in Georgetown, Texas, at 4 and 6 p.m.
