GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Southwestern University softball team split their series doubleheader against the St. Thomas Celts, winning 8-5 and losing 0-3 this Saturday afternoon.

Game 1 – Southwestern 8, St. Thomas 5

Once again, St. Thomas was the first to score a run in the first inning, but the Pirates quickly found the second and third out to move into the next inning. In the bottom of the first, the Pirates battled the Celts to get on the bases, and with the bases loaded, Sam Martinez singled up the middle for Kinly McCaffrey and Katelyn Francis to score, giving Martinez two RBI's. This play gave the Pirates the lead up until the top of the fourth inning, where the Celts scored a run to tie the game 2-2. St. Thomas regained their lead by scoring a run in the top of the fourth while the Pirates went scoreless for three innings. However, in the bottom of the fifth, Southwestern took advantage of the many errors that plagued St. Thomas. At bat, with the bases loaded, Morgan Potter advanced to first off of the second baseman error, which allowed McCaffrey to score. Then Martinez came up to bat and singled up the middle to hit in Izzy Richey to score a run. Before ending the inning, Kealie House singled to second base allowing Martinez and Potter to score two more runs for the Pirates, giving Southwestern a 6-3 lead.

The Pirates pitcher Paige Rassmusen held the Celts from scoring any runs in the top of the sixth, which helped Southwestern keep their lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Francis hit in Maddie Mefford to score a run and Madyson Runge hit in Francis for another run to extend the Pirate's lead. St. Thomas scored two more runs in the top of the seventh, but the Pirate defense held the Celts from scoring any more runs, and the game ended with an 8-5 Pirate win.

Game 2 – St. Thomas 3, Southwestern 0

In the second game, both Southwestern and St. Thomas struggled to score any runs in the first four innings. Both team's defenses held each other to zero runs, but in the top of the fifth inning, the Celt's center fielder Emma Garrett doubled to left field with the bases loaded and hit in three runners to give St. Thomas the lead. The Pirates tried to answer back to the Celt's running streak, but the St. Thomas defense and pitcher Lindsey Longuet held the Pirates off to end the game. At the bottom of the seventh, St. Thomas won 3-0, ending the weekend series.

The Southwestern Pirates are now 6-7 in SCAC play and 8-14 overall. Up next, Southwestern will host a doubleheader against Texas A&M San Antonio on Tuesday, April 13 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Taylor Sanders Field.
