Softball takes two over Austin College Friday

SHERMAN, Texas - Early runs in each game gave Southwestern a lead they would never lose as the Pirates defeated Austin College 6-3, 6-5 Friday evening.

The Pirates wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the first then tacking on one run in the third, fifth and sixth while holding AC to just four hits in the game to win 6-3.

Celeste Silvas and Katie Bricarell both went 2-4 in game one while Kaitlynn Copher posted three RBIs. Chandler Smith earned the win on the mound.

After two scoreless innings in game two, Southwestern posted three runs in the third and added one in the fifth. Austin College finally got on the board with two in the bottom of the fifth, but SU responded with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh.

Those runs proved to be the difference makers as the 'Roos scored three in the bottom half of the inning before the Pirates could close the game for the 6-5 win.

Copher led at the plate again, going 2-3 with 3 RBIs. Taylor Curtis was 2-4 with 2 RBIs and Lindsey Longuet earned the win on the mound.

Southwestern will look to complete the sweep on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
